Split Screen

Split screen shows up to four panes in one session. A pane can be a terminal, an SFTP file browser, a workspace or a web preview, on the same server or on different ones.

Split screen, multi-pane layouts and layout presets require PocketCmd Pro. On Free every session has one pane, and a web preview opens as its own session. If Pro ends while a session has several panes, the session keeps its panes and layout and keeps running, but can’t take new panes or change layout.

  • In a session, open Session settings (the sliders icon in the breadcrumb bar) and tap Split screen, or Add pane once the session has two or more.
  • From the home screen, open a server’s sheet and choose ⋮ › Add to split view.
  • From a workspace’s options, choose Add to session.

The Add pane sheet lists your servers. Expand one to start a new terminal on it, open its file browser or a workspace, attach to one of its tmux sessions, resume a saved Mosh or Eternal Terminal session, or add a session that’s already open in the app.

Add Browser in Session settings adds a web preview pane. It suggests http://localhost:<port> for each active local port forward.

A session holds at most four panes.

Panes Arrangement
2 Side by side, or top and bottom
3 Portrait: one wide pane on top, two below. Landscape: one tall pane on the left, two stacked on the right
4 2 × 2 grid

Change layout in Session settings (or Layout in the session switcher) opens Choose Layout:

  • Automatic Layout adapts to orientation: two panes go left and right in landscape, top and bottom in portrait.
  • Presets set the split ratios for the current pane count:
Panes Presets
2 Balanced (50/50), Focus Left (70/30), Focus Right (30/70), Sidebar Left (25/75), Sidebar Right (75/25)
3 Balanced, Focus Left (60/40), Focus Right (40/60)
4 Balanced, Focus Left (60/40), Focus Right (40/60)
  • Custom lists layouts you saved for this pane count.

Rotate in the session switcher moves the selected pane one position clockwise.

Tap Resize panes in Session settings to show the dividers, then drag them. A pane can take between 20% and 80% of the split. Tap Hide dividers when you’re done.

After resizing, open Choose Layout and tap Save Current Layout. Give it a name; names must be unique per pane count. Long-press a saved layout (or right-click it) to rename or delete it. Built-in presets can’t be changed.

Saved layouts are included in sync and in encrypted exports.

Tap a pane to focus it. The keyboard, the compose bar and the key row above the keyboard all send to the focused pane. With a hardware keyboard, ⌘O (macOS and iOS) or Ctrl+Shift+O (Windows, Linux and Android) cycles focus between panes.

Use Close pane for the focused pane in Session settings, or Close in the session switcher. Closing a pane ends its connection and any process running in it; PocketCmd asks first if the pane is still connected. Closing the last pane closes the session.
